What Is Meditation Music?

Meditation music establishes an atmosphere it helps us relax, forget, or think it drowns out noise, raises our hopes, helps us feel peaceful and harmonious, and releases stress and torment.

by Daniel Kobialka, D.M.A.

Meditation music produces measurable results. It slows our heartbeats down to about one beat per second, which can allow us to relax, let go, meditate and/or fall asleep.

There are different types of meditation however, and different types of music are appropriate for each. A relaxing meditation is intended to help you slow down and release stress, so the best music is easy to listen to and has elements that embody peace and harmony. The instruments and type of music are those that you associate with these qualities. This can differ from person to person. For example, you might associate flute music with lilting tunes and it might then invigorate you, while someone else may equate flute music with peaceful forest scenes or waterfalls.

For people who find meditation difficult, music can be the lure for sitting down and being still for a while. It can drown out distracting sounds, and the individual notes or tunes can give a restless mind something to focus on. For others, it can provide a soothing background of sound that removes us from the world and transports us to a place of hope, peace and calm.

Meditation music is usually without vocals. This allows the listener to allow the emotions to float as if on air, easing pain and worry, loosing the bonds to repetitive, negative, and habitual thinking. Possibilities and aspirations replace doubt, worry, and fear.

Affirmative meditation is best conducted with the assistance of rhythmic music with a beat, and reflexive meditation where the goal is realization and learning should be done with the help of music with a beat of 60 beats per minute. This is the pace of the human heart, and music with this beat stimulates the intellect.

Music is the perfect antidote for a hard, demanding day filled with negativity and stress. Whether you meditate or simply relax, calm and peace are just a on-button away.

Meditating with the help of the right music can stimulate the creation of new neural pathways between the right and left hemispheres of your brain, balancing your brain and leading you to a high-performance state scientists call "whole brain functioning". Who wouldn't like a few more neurons firing to help improve their learning ability, memory, intuition, creativity, focus, and concentration?
